Hobart dominates UCAA crew awards

Mike Guerrieri

June 7, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart crew, under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Mike Guerrieri, dominated the 2004 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association postseason awards. The Statesmen earned the Varsity Eight of the Year, the Novice Eight of the Year, and the Coach of the Year awards.

A two-time UCAA Boat of the Week, the Hobart’s varsity-8+ was comprised of sophomore coxswain Daniel Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), senior stroke Havilland Campbell (LaSalle/Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), sophomore J.M. Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), sophomore Tim Faxon (Salisbury School/Pelham, Mass.), sophomore Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School (N.H.)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), first-year Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Brooktondale, N.Y.), first-year Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), and junior bow Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary School/Bedford, N.H.).

Undefeated in dual races this spring, the varsity eight was ranked as high as 19th in the USRowing Collegiate Poll. The lone Division III team in the rankings, Hobart has handed all of its opponents defeats, including then 13th-ranked Michigan. They also downed Division I Colgate by 8.51 seconds to retain the Seneca Cup.

At the UCAA Championships, the Statesmen easily captured the Varsity-8+ race, crossing the finish line 16.5 seconds ahead of all of the other boats.

A UCAA Boat of the Week selection as well as ECAC Crew of the Week honoree, the novice-8+ also cruised through its spring schedule unscathed in dual races. Featuring first-year coxswain Nick Hoagland (Millbrook School/New York, N.Y.), first-year stroke Ben Draper (The Branson School/San Anselmo, Calif.), first-year Nate Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), first-year Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), first-year Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), first-year David Drennan (Greenhills School/Ann Arbor, Mich.), first-year Robert Reinheimer (Cheverus/Bowdoinham, Maine), first-year Alex Caruthers (Bishop O’Dowd/Kensington, Calif.), first-year bow Jared Desrochers (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.), the novice boat garnered wins over Division I opponents Michigan and Colgate this season. They also downed Ithaca and RIT before grabbing top honors at the UCAA Championships with a 30-second win over runner-up Union.

Guerrieri has led the Statesmen to new heights this season, propelling the varsity-8+ into the USRowing Collegiate Poll for the first time in the program’s history. He helped the Statesmen capture wins in the UCAA Championship varsity and freshmen eights, and impressive showings in the ECAC NIR and IRA championships.
