Hobart crew sweeps RIT

April 10, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.--For the third weekend in a row, Hobart crew posted victories with its varsity eight and freshmen eight on its way to a sweep of RIT.

Hobart’s varsity eight defeated RIT in a time of 6:49.0, 17.42 seconds in front of the Tigers. The lineup featured: sophomore coxswain Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), senior stroke Havilland Campbell (LaSalle/Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), sophomore John Michael Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), sophomore Timothy Faxon (Salsbury/Pelham, N.Y.), sophomore Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul’s School (N.H.)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), first-year Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Brooktondale, N.Y.), first-year Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), and junior bow Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.).

Hobart’s top freshmen boat won by 18.64 seconds, soundly defeating the RIT. The freshmen lineup included, coxswain Nick Hoagland (Millbrook School/New York, N.Y.), stroke Ben Draper (The Branson School/St. Anselmo, Calif.), Nate Kress (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Paul Wasmund (Fabius-Pompey/Fabius, N.Y.), Joe Jameson (Brebeuf Jesuit/Indianapolis, Ind.), Dave Drennan (Greenhills School/Ann Arbor, Mich.), Rob Reinheimer (Chererus/Bowdoinham, Maine), Alex Caruthers (Bishop O'Dowd/Kensington, Calif.), and bow Jared Desrochers (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.).

“We’ve had a good start to the spring sprint season,” Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said. “The test of our program’s speed will continue over the next few weeks as we finish our duel racing against Colgate at home and prepare for our postseason competition.”

The second novice eight lineup included six first-years and two upperclassmen rowers, plus an upperclassman coxswain. After a collision at the start which resulted in a restart of the race, Hobart defeated RIT’s second freshmen eight by 28 seconds. The lineup featured: senior coxswain Sarah Roberts (Burnt Hills-Balltson Lake/Burnt Hills, N.Y.), stroke Caruthers, Chip Armstrong (St. Anthony's/Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), Michael Guglielmo (Northern Highlands/Allendale, N.J.), Andrew King (Bethlehem/Delmar, N.Y.), sophomore Roy Roca (Landmark/New York, N.Y.), Ian Murray (Nashua/Nashua, N.H.), junior Tyler Spence (St. Ignatius College Prep/Lake Shore, Ill.), and bow Desrochers.

Hobart returns to action at 10 a.m., on April 18, when Colgate visits Hellstrom Boathouse. The Statesmen will be looking to retain the Seneca Cup, the trophy award to the annual winner of the Hobart-Colgate varsity eight race.
