March 27, 2004 ITHACA, N.Y.--The Hobart crew produced a stunning upset of the University of Michigan on Saturday. The Statesmen varsity eight defeated the Wolverines, who were ranked 13th in the country in the latest US Rowing Association poll, by 7.6 seconds and topped the host Ithaca Bombers by 11.2 seconds. Hobart's freshmen eight also defeated Michigan's first freshman eight by 7.9 seconds and Ithaca by 26.4 seconds. "Our outstanding performance this early in the season is an important first step in attaining our goal of top finishes at this year's New York State and ECAC postseason championships," Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said. Hobart's freshman four was also victorious by 14 seconds over Michigan's entry. Hobarts varsity eight was led by senior stroke Havilland Campbell (LaSalle/Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.), first-years Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Brooktondale, N.Y.) and Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), and sophomores Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), JM Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), Timothy Faxon (Salsbury/Pelham, N.Y.), and Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Pauls School (N.H.)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe). Hobart returns to action on April 3, back in Ithaca for a follow-up duel race with the Bombers. |
