Hobart crew wins at Stonehurst Regatta

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--The Hobart College crew opened the 2002-03 campaign by winning the Stonehurst Regatta collegiate division. The Statesmen varsity eight finished fifth overall and won the collegiate division with a weighted championship time of 29:26.69.

"This is an excellent start to the season, and it gives us great momentum heading into the Head of the Charles," first-year Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said.

In a two race format, Hobart covered the 5-kilometer morning course in 15 minutes, 53.75 seconds, and the 1,500-meter afternoon course in 4 minutes, 30.98 seconds. The Statesmen were 9 seconds ahead of Toronto, the second place finisher in the collegiate division.

Seniors Kevin Stevenson (South Burlington/Burlington, Vt.), and Dave Undercoffler (Ithaca/Canandaigua, N.Y.), junior Mike Fazio (Lakeland/Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), sophomores Mike Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.), Matthew Monbouquette (Moses Brown/Warwick, R.I.), and Vaughn Wascho (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and first-years Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Paul's School (NH)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), Robert Loring (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) along with first-year coxswain Daniel Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.) comprised the Hobart varsity eight.

Hobart also won the Stonehurst collegiate division in 2000.

The Statesmen's second varsity eight finished eighth in the collegiate division and 16th overall.

Harvard won the open division with a championship time of 28 minutes, 5.02 seconds.
