October 19, 2003 BOSTON, Mass.Competing in the Championship Eights event at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta for the second time in history, the Hobart College crew team turned in a strong performance with a 24th place finish of 41 boats this past weekend. The Statesmen were the second Division III boat across the line, covering the challenging three-mile course in 15:09.527. Ranked 41st heading into a competition that featured the top university eights, U.S. national team boats, and the top crews from the around the world, Hobart outraced the likes of the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Virginia, and Marist despite a collision with Colgate in the last half of the race. The team has shown this fall that it can be a real contender in the college ranks, said Head Coach Mike Guerrieri. Results like this improve our confidence heading into the spring racing season. Hobarts varsity 8+ was led by senior, Havilland Campbell (LaSalle/Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Michael Hoepp (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bedford, N.H.), first-years Sep Levatich (Ithaca/Brooktondale, N.Y.) and Michael Grenier (Brooks School/Methuen, Mass.), and sophomores Dan Gilbert (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.), JM Chadonic (The Lawrenceville School/New York, N.Y.), Timothy Faxon (Salsbury/Pelham, N.Y.), and Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Pauls School (N.H.)/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe). The Statesmen will hit the water again on Oct. 25, at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The following afternoon, the team will travel to Rochester, N.Y. for the Wylie Chase regatta. |
