GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart football team moved up to No. 17 in the American Football Coaches Association’s weekly poll, the highest ranking in the team’s history. The Statesmen were 19th last week and in the final poll of 2004, the previous high-water mark for the program.
Hobart (4-0, 2-0) rolled up 357 yards of total offense in a 24-7 victory over WPI on Oct. 1. The Statesmen were led by Doug Blakowski (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.). Facing the top rushing defense in the Liberty League, the junior running back nearly tripled what the Engineers came into the game allowing (59.3 yds/g), gaining a career-high 172 yards.
Through the season’s first four games, Blakowski leads the Liberty League in yards per carry 6.2, is second in scoring (13.5 ppg), and third in rushing yards per game (138.8). He is on pace to become the first Hobart back to rush for more than 1,200 yards in a season since Don Aleksiewicz ’73 in 1972.
On the other side of the ball, the Statesmen lead the League in total defense (277.2 yds/g) and rushing defense (91.2 yds/g).
Hobart returns to action at noon on Oct. 8, when the Statesmen travel to Coast Guard Academy (2-2, 0-2).
