GENEVA, N.Y.—Four Hobart football players were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon, following the Statesmen’s 33-27 conference championship clinching, overtime win against Union College.
Sophomore quarterback Shawn Mizro (Newark/Newark, N.Y.), senior defensive end Chris Purtell (Pioneer/Sardinia, N.Y.), senior wide receiver/punter Dan Suozzi (New Hampton/New Canaan, Conn.), and first-year linebacker Jeff Sanders (Camden/Camden, N.Y.) were named the Liberty League co-offensive, co-defensive, co-special teams, and co-rookie performers of the week.
Mizro enjoyed a career-day on Saturday. The first-year starter completed 22-of-40 passes for a career-high 339 yards and a Hobart record five touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. In addition to his single game record for passing TDs, he also eclipsed the Hobart season record (22 in 10 games in 2002) with his 23rd scoring pass of the year. His 339 passing yards are the third highest game total in Hobart history.
For the season, Mizro has completed 56.5 percent of his passes for 1,628 yards and 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions for a pass efficiency rating of 157.83.
Purtell recorded 11 tackles. His stops included four tackles for a loss and four solo efforts. He leads the Liberty League’s top scoring defense in tackles (66), tackles for a loss (14.0), and sacks (4.0).
Suozzi averaged 37.6 yards per punt. He landed four of his seven punts on the day inside the Dutchmen’s 20-yard line. Suozzi also returned two punts for 19 yards (9.5/ret). His most important special teams contribution came in the fourth quarter on fourth and 10 from Hobart’s own 1-yard line. Suozzi improvised a called fake punt pass play into a 14-yard scramble and a first down that launched the Statesmen on a 16-play, 87-yard game-tying drive.
Suozzi also had nine receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns. During the game, he broke the Hobart record for consecutive games with at least one reception, raising the mark to 26.
Sanders recorded a career-high nine tackles in Hobart’s 33-27 overtime win against Union. He had four solo stops, a half tackle for a loss, and forced a fumble. His nine tackles were third on the team on Saturday. For the season, Sanders is sixth on the team with 39 stops.
Hobart will close out the regular season at 1 p.m., on Nov. 13, when Rochester visits Boswell Field. The game will air live on WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3) and on the Internet at: web.hws.edu/statesmen/football/schedule.asp.
