GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart senior defensive end Chris Purtell (Pioneer/Sardinia, N.Y.) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his efforts in a 33-27 overtime win against Union College on Nov. 6. This marks the third time this season he has been so honored by D3football.com.

The Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week recorded 11 tackles in the conference championship-clinching win. His stops included four tackles for a loss and four solo efforts. None of his tackles was more important than his last. On fourth and goal from the half yard line, Purtell was a key figure in a goal line stand that preserved the tie and allowed the Statesmen to win two plays later.

Purtell leads the Liberty League’s top scoring defense in tackles (66), tackles for a loss (14.0), and sacks (4.0). For his career, he has 150 tackles (74 solo), including 24 tackles for a loss of minus 75 yards. Purtell also has seven and a half career sacks.

Hobart (7-1, 6-0 Liberty) closes out the regular season against the University of Rochester (4-5, 3-3) at 1 p.m., on Nov. 13, on Boswell Field. The Statesmen will honor the program’s 15 seniors prior to the start of the game, and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1954 squad’s 8-0-0 season at halftime. The game will air live on WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3) and on the Internet at: web.hws.edu/statesmen/football/schedule.asp.

As Liberty League champions, the Statesmen earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 28-team field will be announced around 1 p.m., on Nov. 14, on ESPNews.
