Union spoils Hobart’s unbeaten hopes

November 5 , 2005

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Hobart football team’s hopes of an unbeaten season came to an end this afternoon at Frank Bailey Field as the Union College Dutchmen upended the Statesmen 28-18. Hobart’s first loss spoiled a record setting afternoon for junior quarterback Shawn Mizro (Newark/Newark, N.Y.), who completed a single game record 31 passes (out of 46) for 428 yards, the second highest game total by a Statesman.

Hobart (7-1, 5-1 Liberty) racked up 498 yards of total offense to 319 for Union (9-0, 6-0). The Statesmen got 133 receiving yards on just six catches from sophomore wideout James Wright (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) and 101 yards on eight receptions by senior Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.).

Hobart got off to a good start, intercepting Union on the first play from scrimmage, but the Statesmen went three and out on the ensuing possession. The Dutchmen were much more effective with their second drive, moving 80 yards on eight plays and scoring the game’s first touchdown on a five yard plunge by running back Tom Arcidiacono. Union led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Dutchmen added another seven points with their first drive of the second quarter, covering 65 yards on eight plays. Wideout Steve Angiletta found the end zone on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Anthony Marotti.

The Statesmen cracked the scoring column with their second possession of the second quarter, moving 61 yards on 14 plays. Hobart sputtered at the Union 16 and had to settle for a 33 yard field goal by first-year Kevin Olson (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.).

Union led 14-3 at the break.

Hobart struck first in the second half on a 3-yard scamper by junior running back Doug Blakowski (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.), capping a 6-play, 54-yard drive. Blakowski, who entered the game seventh in the nation in rushing, was limited to just 51 yards on the ground. The Statesmen trailed 14-11 after Blakowski scored on a two-point conversion run.

In the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen sandwiched a pair of passing touchdowns around a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mizro to sophomore wideout Steve Sorhaindo (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to round out the scoring.

Senior linebacker Jimmy Gradis (Elwood John Glenn/Greenlawn, N.Y.) led the Hobart defense with eight tackles. Senior defensive tackle Rick Eicheldinger (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) added five stops, including a sack, and his first career interception.

Hobart will close out the regular season at the University of Rochester on Nov. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. The Statesmen can still earn a share of the Liberty League title with a win over Rochester and a Rensselaer win at Union.
