Statesmen post gridiron shutout in opener
September 10 , 2005
CARLISLE, Pa.—Junior running back Doug Blakowski rushed for a game-high 139 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead visiting Hobart to a 21-0 win over Dickinson. Blakowski broke through the line and ran 72 yards on the Statesmen's second possession and later scored on runs of 1 and 29 yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The Red Devil (1-1) defense was solid all afternoon despite some big plays by the Hobart (1-0) offense. The Statesmen capitalized on turnovers and good field position, scoring their second touchdown following an interception by junior defensive end Jim Drury at the Dickinson 36-yard line. Hobart stayed with its offense on 4th-and-6 from the 32-yard line and the gamble paid-off as junior quarterback Shawn Mizro connected with sophomore James Wright inside the Devils' 1-yard line. Blakowski ended the drive on the ensuing play to put Hobart in front 14-0.
The Statesmen also used a short field on their final scoring drive. The Devils offense started to click in the third quarter as junior quarterback Matt Torchia started the second half with seven straight completions. The Red Devils were unable, however, to move the ball into the red zone on that drive or at any time during the game.
The final nail in the Red Devils' coffin began at their own 47-yard line. After sophomore fullback Dan Spinella sprung loose for an 18-yard pick up, Blakowski took the next play 29 yards to the house.
Hobart finished with 295 yards of offense, staying mostly on the ground with 229 yards rushing. 101 of those yards came on two of Bladowski's scoring runs. The Devils were held to just 65 yards rushing and threw for a modest 119 yards on the day.
Senior linebacker Jimmy Gradis, junior end Andy Purdie, senior linebacker Tony Clemente, and first-year tackle Ryan Aruck paced the Hobart defense with seven tackles each. Purdie and Clemente eached logged a team-high 1.5 sacks.
Dickinson sophomore punter Aren Johnson had a busy but productive afternoon. He had one blocked in 12 attempts, but also dropped three deep inside the Hobart 20-yard line. Johnson drilled one 60 yards to the Hobart 4-yard line and later pinned the Statesmen on their own 3-yard line.
The shutout is the first for the Hobart defense since blanking St. Lawrence 47-0 on Sept. 29, 2001.
Hobart returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17, when the Statesmen host Franklin & Marshall on Boswell Field.
