GENEVA, N.Y.—Two Hobart football players earned weekly honors from the Liberty League this afternoon. Senior running back Doug Blakowski (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.) was named the Co-Offensive Performer of the Week, while first-year kicker Denis Avdic (Utica-Proctor/Utica, N.Y.) was named the Special Teams Performer of the Week.
Blakowski rushed for a career-high 214 yards on 28 carries (7.6 yds/att) and scored a touchdown to lead the Statesmen (5-0, 3-0 Liberty League) to a 30-19 victory at Merchant Marine. He had nine runs of 10 yards or more, including a season-long run of 50 yards. Blakowski’s 214 yards on the ground are the most by a Hobart player since Keith Brandon ’01 rushed for 215 yards against Alfred on Oct. 24, 1998.
Blakowski has rushed for 602 yards (5.1 yds/att) and nine touchdowns this season. He is second in the Liberty League in rushing yards per game (120.4) and all purpose yards per game (157.2) and is third in scoring (10.8 ppg).
This is the second straight game Blakowski has earned the Liberty League’s weekly accolade, after rushing for 119 yards and three touchdowns on Sept. 30 against WPI.
Avdic scored six points against the Mariners. He kicked his fourth consecutive field goal, this one from 27 yards. Avdic also converted three of four point after tries. He is second on the team and ninth in the conference in scoring (5.0 ppg).
Avdic was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week following his Hobart debut in a 31-28 win over Dickinson on Sept. 9.
Hobart is back in action on Oct. 21, when the Statesmen travel to St. Lawrence for another Liberty League match up. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
