GENEVA, N.Y.—Two Hobart football players were among those named to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Preseason All-America teams. Senior running back Doug Blakowski (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.) and senior quarterback Shawn Mizro (Newark/Newark, N.Y.) both received honorable mention.
Last season, Blakowski gained 1,364 yards on the ground, averaging a Liberty League best 5.8 yards per carry. He boasted eight scoring plays of 50 yards or more, including a long of 80 yards during a 27-9 win over Merchant Marine. Blakowski rushed for 17 touchdowns and tied the Hobart season record for most 100-yard games with nine. His exceptional efforts were rewarded with a spot on two All-America teams in 2005, garnering third-team honors from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette and honorable mention from D3football.com.
A two-time All-Liberty League selection, Mizro has led Hobart’s passing attack to new heights over the past two seasons. In 2005, he threw for 2,143 yards and 17 touchdowns, raising his career numbers to 4,407 yards and 47 touchdowns. The latter tied the Hobart career mark, while the former is third all-time, 1,271 yards shy of the career record. Mizro holds the Statesmen records for completions in a game (31 at Union in 2005), completion percentage in a game (89.5 vs. Coast Guard in ’05), touchdown passes in a game (5 vs. Union in ’04, vs. RPI in ’05) and in a season (30 in ’04), passing efficiency in a game (246.8 vs. Coast Guard in ’05) and in a season (149.6 in ’04), and passing yards in a season (2,253 in ’04).
The Statesmen—who are ranked in the top 25 of several preseason polls—open their 113th season at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9, when Hobart hosts Dickinson College.
