Hoffman, Sorhaindo share Liberty League awards; Statesmen move up in D3football.com poll

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two Hobart football players were honored by the Liberty League after the Statesmen’s 24-17 win at No. 24 Rensselaer on Saturday. The triumph also boosted Hobart (3-0, 1-0) one spot in the D3football.com top 25, moving into the No. 18 spot.
Senior linebacker Evan Hoffman (Fairfield Prep/Fairfield, Conn.) was named the Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week. He made nine tackles, forced two fumbles, and recovered a third against the Engineers. In the first quarter, his forced fumble led to the Statesmen’s first touchdown. In the third quarter, he recovered a fumbled punt to set up Hobart’s second touchdown and forced a fumble to set the stage for the Statesmen’s third TD.
Junior kick returner/wide receiver Steve Sorhaindo (Yorktown/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named the Co-Special Teams Performer of the Week. He averaged 31.0 yards per kick return (2-62) and caught three passes for 40 yards at Rensselaer. He returned the opening kickoff 37 yards to the Hobart 47-yard line. Sorhaindo’s second return went for 25 yards. He leads the Liberty League in kickoff return average at 32.2 yards per return.
Hobart hosts WPI on Sept. 30. The Statesmen and Engineers will kickoff at 1 p.m. on Boswell Field. Fans unable to attend the game, can listen to WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca) or follow along online.
