GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College football Head Coach Mike Cragg recently announced the team captains for the 2007 season. Soon-to-be seniors Jeff Sanders (Camden/Camden, N.Y.) and Andrew Strom (Novato/Novato, Calif.), and junior Ryan Aruck (Canandaigua/Canandaigua, N.Y.) will take charge of the Statesmen this fall.

An inside linebacker, Sanders also served as captain during the 2006 season. He played in all 10 games and recorded 59 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions. The three-time All-Liberty League pick will begin his last season as a Statesman with 172 career tackles.

A transfer, Strom will step into the starting quarterback role after playing in nine games in 2006 behind standout Shawn Mizro ’07. Strom completed six passes for 48 yards, including a season-long 16-yard pass in Hobart’s 19-14 win over WPI. Additionally, he picked up 90 yards rushing on 12 carries for the season, recording a season-long 38-yard run in a 30-19 victory over Merchant Marine.

Aruck has played in all 21 games in his first two seasons as a defensive tackle for the Statesmen. Last fall, he ranked third on the team in total tackles with 65 and led the team in assisted tackles with 47, earning All-Liberty League second team honors for his efforts. Aruck also registered 4.5 tackles for a loss, deflected a pass, and blocked a punt in 2006. He has posted 121 career tackles and 1.5 sacks in his first two years as a Statesman.

The Statesmen will open their 2007 campaign on Sept. 8 at Dickinson. Hobart will play its home-opener on Boswell Field one week later, on Sept. 15, against Carnegie Melon.
