GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College Football Head Coach Mike Cragg recently announced the appointment of former University of Connecticut wide receiver Matt Cutaia to serve as an assistant coach for the 2007 season. The native of Webster will work with the Statesmen’s wide receivers.
“With his Division I playing experience and the success the Huskies had during his career, I’m certain Matt has a lot to offer our players,” Cragg said. “What impressed me most about him is his strong work-ethic and dogged determination. Those are two of the hallmarks of Hobart football, traits we instill in our student-athletes everyday.”
In 34 career games with the Huskies, Cutaia accumulated 80 receptions for 1,047 yards and three touchdowns. A starter in all four of his seasons in Storrs, Conn., his career was hampered by season-ending injuries in 2002 and 2003. Cutaia was healthy throughout his senior season and put together the most productive season of his career. He finished the campaign with 44 catches for 545 yards and a touchdown as the Huskies earned their first bowl bid, a 39-10 win over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl.
Getting a jump-start on his coaching career Cutaia spent the spring semester of his senior year, serving as an assistant wide receiver coach for UConn’s spring practices. He graduated from Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science.
At Webster High School, Cutaia was a three-year letterman and helped lead the Warriors to the 1999 New York State Class AA Championship with a sterling 13-0 record. He was named to several all-star teams that season, including All-Greater Rochester and All-New York State.
In addition to coaching the Statesmen, Cutaia is pursuing a master’s degree in adolescent education from St. John Fisher College.
Cutaia takes over the part-time coaching position formerly held by Randy Grenier, who resigned following 16 years to focus on his new responsibilities with the Geneva School District.
