Mason's sack voted Hobart's best
March 2, 2007
More than 29,000 votes were cast in the balloting for the 2006 Hobart Football Defensive Play of the Year and senior linebacker Tyler Mason's sack against Rochester was tabbed the best. With just over 13,000 votes, Mason's take down of Rochester quarterback Aaron Molisani won out over Evan Hoffman's leaping tackle in the backfield against Dickinson by more than 3,000 votes.
Mason races into the Rochester backfield untouched and wraps up Molisani before had a chance to look for his second receiver. It was one of eight sacks by Hobart in the 31-21 win.
Mason finished his career with 77 tackles, including 44 during his senior season. He posted a pair of sacks against the Yellowjackets and notched a career-high eight stops the following weekend in the NCAA Tournament against Rowan.
The Statesmen finished their 113th season with an 8-2 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in the Liberty League. It's the 10th straight winning season for Hobart, the longest string of sustained success in the program's history. The Statesmen earned a share of the conference championship and made its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA playoffs.
