Five Statesmen earn UCAA honors

GENEVA, N.Y.--Five Hobart College football players were recognized by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association after the Statesmen's season opening 47-0 victory over St. Lawrence University. First-year running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) was named the league's Rookie of the Week. Junior defensive tackle Brad Griffith (Massena/Massena, N.Y.), first-year running back John Holleran (Choate Rosemary Hall/Sharon, Mass.), sophomore linebacker David Szentesy (Lackawanna/Lackawanna, N.Y.), and first-year running back Brandon Thurman (Webster/Webster, N.Y.) were named to the UCAA Honor Roll.

Godinho carried the ball 13 times for 150 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run. The first-year is currently Hobart's leading rusher and second in the UCAA with 284 yards on 49 carries.

Griffith made seven tackles against the Saints, including four solo and three assisted. The defensive tackle recorded a sack for a loss of 10 yards and broke up three passes. Griffith is the Statesmen's sixth leading tackler with 13, including seven solo and six assisted.

Holleran carried the ball 10 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns. The first-year scored on runs of 35, 3, and 37 yards. Holleran leads the team in scoring with 18 points and is Hobart's third leading rusher with 150 yards on 21 carries.

Szentesy was the Statesmen's top tackler against St. Lawrence with nine, including six solo and three assisted. The sophomore also intercepted a pass and broke up another. Szentesy is second on the team in tackles with 19, including 11 solo and eight assisted.

Thurman was the third Hobart rusher to hit the 100-yard mark against the Saints. The first-year carried the ball 18 times for 106 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown run. Thurman is fourth on the team in rushing with 129 yards on 28 carries.

The Statesmen (2-1, 1-1 UCAA) host UCAA rival University of Rochester on Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 1p.m.
