Bell earns honorable mention All-American status

Alex Bell '05

December 17, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart junior offensive guard Alex Bell (Wallkill/Modena, N.Y.) was one of 123 players from 76 colleges and universities named the Division III Sports Information Directors All-America teams that were released today. The oldest Division III football All-America team rewarded Bell with honorable mention.

One of the most dominant blockers in Division III, Bell was a first-team All-UCAA selection this season, starting 10 games without allowing a sack. The Statesmen, who averaged 156.6 yards rushing and 186.2 yards passing per game, ran the majority of their rushing plays behind the blocks of Bell. A two-time Football Gazette All-East selection, Bell and his fellow linemen were named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week after Hobart rushed for 248 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-25 regular season ending upset of previously unbeaten Rensselaer.

Seven days later, the Statesmen rushed for a season-high 315 yards and two touchdowns behind Bell in Hobart’s 34-18 victory over Norwich in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl.

The Statesmen finished the season with a 6-4 record, including a 3-1 mark in the UCAA. League champion for the second straight season, Hobart won its first ECAC bowl this year, after earning an NCAA Tournament berth in two of the previous three seasons.

The 26th annual team was selected by a panel of 30 sports information directors, including the founder, Wally Johnson of St. Lawrence University. The SIDs represent the four playoff regions in NCAA Division III. Voters made first-, second-, and third-team selections with candidates receiving points on a 25-15-10 scale. In addition to the top three teams, players who received 100 or more points earned honorable mention status.
