Bombers stop Statesmen streak, 52-13

October 27, 2001

ITHACA, N.Y.--The Ithaca Bombers halted Hobart's four-game win streak and avenged the Statesmen's 19-0 victory over Ithaca last season in Geneva with a 52-13 win over Hobart. Both teams harbored playoff hopes, the Bombers helped their cause, improving to 7-1 on the season, while the Statesmen's hopes slipped with their record to 5-2.

Ithaca gave its homecoming crowd a fantastic aerial show in the first half, as quarterback Brian Young completed his first nine passes of the afternoon, leading the Bombers to three first quarter touchdowns and a 21-0 lead.

Young finished 13-of-19 for 287 yards and four touchdowns.

The Statesmen finally broke through the Ithaca defense early in the second quarter. The Hobart offensive line opened a huge hole for running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.), who ran 56-yards untouched. The 56-yarder was the longest touchdown play allowed by the Bombers this season.

Godinho finished with 108 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries (5.1 yds/att). The first-year has rushed for more than 100 yards in five consecutive games.

The Bombers answered with a long play of their own, a 70-yard pass play from Young to Mike Marks for a 28-7 lead. A 33-yard field goal at the 6:01 mark extended the lead to 30-7.

The Statesmen logged their second touchdown of the afternoon six seconds before halftime, completing their best drive of the game. The 13-play, 72-yard drive ended with a 9-yard pass from sophomore Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) to sophomore wide receiver Joe Pirozzolo (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.) to close to 30-13 at the half.

In the second half, the Ithaca offense continued to pour it on, adding three touchdowns. The Bombers finished with 457 yards of total offense, more than 100 yards more than any other Hobart opponent this season.

Sophomore linebacker Dave Szentesy (Lackawanna/Lackawanna, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 10 tackles, including half a sack. Junior defensive end Matt Daley (Bridgeton Academy/Rutland, Vt.) was close behind with nine stops, including a half sack.

The Statesmen return to Boswell Field for the final time during the regular season, on Nov. 3, when they host St. John Fisher. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m., on senior day.
