Statesmen football captains announced

March 21, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. –Hobart College Head Football Coach Mike Cragg has announced that junior defensive end Matt Daley (Bridgton Academy/Rutland, Vt.), junior linebackers Everton McLean (Bishop Maginn/Albany, N.Y.) and Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.), and sophomore quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) will serve as captains for the 2002 season.

The Statesmen’s coach was very pleased with the team’s selections and spoke highly of the four.

“We are exceptionally proud to have four wonderful people leading the Hobart football family, both on and off the field,” said Cragg.

Daley, a second-team All-Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association selection in each of the last two seasons, was second on the team in solo tackles (37), tackles for a loss (9) and sacks (4.0) in the fall. He was third on the team in total tackles (51). He also broke up four passes, and forced and recovered a fumble. Daley also served as a captain for the Hobart hockey team this season.

McLean, who also served as a captain last fall, was the team’s fifth leading tackler with 45, including 24 solo. He was third on the team with eight tackles for a loss, including 2.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles. McLean was also a member of the UCAA second-team.

Booth, a preseason All-American (D3Football.com and Don Hansen's Football Gazette) and an All-UCAA first-teamer, led the team in solo tackles (41), tackles for a loss (18), and sacks (5.0). Booth also intercepted a pass and broke up five others, blocked a punt, forced a fumble, and registered a safety. The junior is currently serving as a team captain for the Hobart lacrosse team.

Swanson started all nine games for the Statesmen in 2001, completing 48.7 percent of his passes (110-226) for 1,444 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the season finale against Rensselaer, the sophomore set Hobart single-game records for passing attempts (54), completions (25), passing yards (437), and total yards (428).

The Statesmen open their 109th season, eighth under Cragg (41-27), at home against Dickinson College on Sept. 14, 2002, at 1 p.m. Hobart will also host St. Lawrence University (Oct. 5), Alfred University (Oct. 26), Ithaca College (Nov. 2) and Rensselaer (Nov. 16) next season.
