Future Statesmen lead East to Eddie Meath All-Star win

July 28, 2003

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Two future Hobart Statesmen earned MVP honors in last night’s Eddie Meath All-Star Football Game. Newark High School quarterback Shawn Mizro and Victor High School defensive lineman Andy Purdie led the East to a 14-6 victory at Fauver Stadium.

Both players will don the purple and orange of Hobart this fall. The defending UCAA Champion Statesmen open the 2003 campaign on Sept. 13 at Dickinson.

“Any time you can come out and end your high school career with a win is a great honor,” Mizro told the Canandaigua Daily Messenger. “It’s been a special week with these guys and we all bonded quickly.”

With the East clinging to a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter, Mizro threw the go ahead touchdown. He was named the team’s Co-Offensive MVP.

The second half belonged to the defenses.

The East’s Defensive MVP, Purdie was seemingly everywhere, especially when it counted most. Late in the fourth quarter, the West drove to the East’s 6-yard line, but Purdie sacked the West’s quarterback on each of the final two plays of the game to preserve the victory.

“It’s been nice to knock heads again,” Purdie told the Canandaigua Daily Messenger. “I haven't gotten hit that hard in awhile and it felt good.”
