Holleran, Hobart run past Dickinson

September 14, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore running back Jack Holleran (Choate Rosemary Hall/Sharon, Mass.) ran for a game-high 114 yards on just 10 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run to lead Hobart College to a 27-3 win over visiting Dickinson College. The win marks the third straight season opening win by the Statesmen over the Red Devils.

After the Hobart (1-0) defense held Dickinson (0-2) to three plays and out on its first possession, the Statesmen offense went right to work. Hobart needed just eight plays to go 54 yards and take a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by sophomore running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) less than five minutes into the contest. Junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 on the drive for 44 yards.

Godinho finished with 107 yards rushing and a pair of TDs, while the rain that began late in the first quarter limited Swanson’s effectiveness. He finished 11-of-24 for 109 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The Red Devils recovered a Hobart fumble deep in the Statesmen’s zone midway through the second quarter setting up a 25-yard field goal by sophomore Drew Magyar (Morrisville, Pa.) for their lone score of the afternoon.

Hobart answered just 53 seconds later on Holleran’s 59-yard scamper, to send Hobart into halftime with a 14-3 lead.

Dickinson did have another chance to score before the break after intercepting Swanson inside the Hobart 20, but three plays later, the Red Devils had lost a yard and Magyar’s 35-yard field goal attempt missed wide right.

The Statesmen opened the second half with a drive that showcased Godinho’s talents. The 2001 ECAC Northwest Rookie of the Year carried the ball on each of Hobart’s six plays, gaining 42 yards and his second touchdown of the day.

Senior wide receiver Joe Pirozzolo (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.) closed out the scoring when he hauled in a three-yard Swanson pass with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The rest of the afternoon belonged to the Hobart defense and the right foot of sophomore punter Dan Suozzi (New Hampton/New Canaan, Conn.). Suozzi, who averaged 40.5 yards per punt including four inside the Dickinson 20, set up the defense with booming punts that pinned the Red Devils deep in their own territory. Dickinson had an average starting field position of its own 19-yard line in the first quarter and its own 17-yard line in the fourth.

Additionally, Suozzi caught a pair of passes for 18 yards, returned a kick off 50 yards, and returned four punts for a total of 74 yards (18.5 yds/ret).

Seniors Brad Griffith (Massena/Syracuse, N.Y.) and Everton McLean (Bishop Maginn/Albany, N.Y.) led Hobart with nine and eight tackles, respectively. Griffith also recovered a pair of Dickinson fumbles.

After rushing for 296 yards against Juniata last weekend, the Red Devils managed just 110 on the ground today, and just 202 yards of total offense.

Dickinson sophomore defensive back Mike Andree (Pottstown, Pa.) led all tacklers with 10 stops.

Hobart opens its Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association schedule when it returns to action on Sept. 28, at Union College. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
