Ground game rolls over St. Lawrence

September 9, 2001

CANTON, N.Y.--The Hobart College football rode its ground game to a convincing 47-0 UCAA victory over St. Lawrence University. First-year running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) led three Statesmen with more than 100 yards rushing, registering 150 yards on just 13 carries, all in the first half.

The Hobart offense finished with 442 yards rushing, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. The Statesmen's rushing total is more than triple the 139 rushing yards the team put up in the season's first two games. Hobart's point total was its highest since defeating the University of Rochester 48-21 in 1999.

The game's opening possession was a microcosm of the game as a whole. The first five plays were hand offs to Godinho, gaining 16 yards. The Saints (0-4, 0-3) gave the Statesmen (2-1, 1-1) 10 additional yards on off-sides penalties. Following an incompletion, first-year running back John Holleran (Choate Rosemary Hall/Sharon, Mass.) took a handoff, 35 yards for the first of Hobart's seven touchdowns.

Holleran finished with 102 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries.

St. Lawrence went three plays and out on its first possession and the Hobart running game picked up right where it left off. The Statesmen's ensuing drive covered 51 yards on just six plays and capped with an 18-yard touchdown run by Godinho.

First-year running back Brandon Turman (Webster/Webster, N.Y.) took the first play of the second quarter 54 yards for a touchdown to give Hobart a 20-0 lead. Thurman finished with 106 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

The Statesmen led 34-0 at halftime and extended their lead with a 59-yard towchdown run by junior running back Jerome Brown (Christian Brothers Academy/Albany, N.Y.) in the third quarter and a 37-yard run by Holleran in the fourth quarter. Brown finished with 98 yards rushing on seven carries.

Defensively, Hobart posted its fourth shutout in its last eight games. Sophomore linebacker David Szentesy (Lackawanna/Lackawanna, N.Y.) led the way with nine tackles and his first interception of the season, while junior tackle Brad Griffith (Massena/Massena, N.Y.) contributed seven tackles, including a sack, and three pass break ups. Senior linebacker Jesse Aquilino (Fox Lane/Bedford, N.Y.) also recorded seven tackles.

The Statesmen return to action on Sat., Oct. 6, when they host Rochester on Boswell Field. The afternoon is Take A Kid To The Game Day. All children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
