September 30, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College football team returned to the Upstate New York Division III Football poll at No. 3 this week. The Statesmen, who debuted at No. 5 after a season opening win, but slipped out after an off week, are 2-0 and coming off a 14-6 win at Union College. Junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) threw a 38-yard touchdown and scored on a 1-yard plunge to account for the two Hobart TDs, while the defense did the rest, forcing seven turnovers (4 INT, 3 fumbles) and keeping the Dutchmen out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter. Junior linebacker David Szentesy (Lackawanna/Lackawanna, N.Y.) and senior defensive end Chris Hanly (Swampscott/Swampscott, Mass.) led the charge. Szentesy recorded a career-high 16 tackles, including a half sack, while Hanly added 11 stops, a half sack, a fumble recovery that led to the Statesmens second touchdown, and an interception with no time remaining that sealed the victory. Hobart returns to action on Oct. 5, when St. Lawrence visits Boswell Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. At halftime, the Statesmen will honor the Hobart Hall of Fame classes of 2001 and 2002.
