Statesmen blank Diplomats, 44-0

October 13, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College football team posted its third consecutive victory this afternoon by handing Franklin & Marshall College its worst loss of the season, 44-0. First-year running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) led Hobart with his third straight game rushing for more than 100 yards, carrying the ball 25 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, while catching a game-high four passes for 37 yards.

The shutout was the fifth in the past 10 games for the Statesmen (4-1), who limited the Diplomats (1-6) to just 185 yards of total offense, including a measly 46 yards rushing. Junior linebacker Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) led the charge with seven tackles, including five for a loss and a pair of sacks. In all, Hobart recorded a season-high six sacks, while forcing and recovering three fumbles.

The Statesmen defense recorded the only points of the first quarter, when Booth sacked F&M's junior quarterback David Makson (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) in the Diplomats' end zone for a safety.

With 11:15 remaining in the second quarter, Godinho completed a 9-play, 66-yard Hobart drive with a 9-yard carry for a touchdown. The Statesmen defense forced Franklin & Marshall to punt on its ensuing possession, setting up Hobart's longest touchdown of the afternoon.

Following a pair of Jerome Brown (Christian Brothers Academy/Albany, N.Y.) rushes for 17 yards, the Statesmen took to the air. Sophomore quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) connected with senior wide out Pat Haggerty (Bishop Maginn/Albany, N.Y.) for an 8-yard gain and a first down at the Hobart 45. On the next play, sophomore wide receiver Jermaine Patterson (Lockport/Lockport, N.Y.) got behind the Diplomats' secondary and Swanson found him for a 55-yard strike, the longest reception of the season by a Statesman. The PAT gave Hobart a 16-0 lead heading into the break.

Hobart broke the contest open in the third quarter, and it was the Statesmen defense that got the ball rolling, literally. On Franklin & Marshall's opening possession on third down from the F&M 42, senior linebacker Jesse Aquilino (Fox Lane/Bedford, N.Y.) sacked Makson and jarred the ball loose. Junior defensive tackle Brad Griffith (Massena/Massena, N.Y.) recovered the ball and returned it to the F&M 5. Four plays later, Swanson connected with junior tight end Jeremy Archer (Randolph/Randolph, N.Y.) for a 1-yard touchdown.

Swanson finished with a season-high 202 yards passing and two touchdowns, completing 14-of-24 pass attempts. He also rushed for a 5-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. The Statesmen also got rushing touchdowns by first-year running back John Holleran (Choate Rosemary Hall/Sharon, Mass.) from 42 yards out and sophomore quarterback Justin Morrison (McKinley/Buffalo, N.Y.) from 25 yards away.

The Hobart offense, which had 10 different players rush the ball and six different players catch passes, finished with 323 yards rushing and a season-high 525 yards of total offense.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Andy Rehring (State College/State College, Pa.) led the Diplomats with a game-high 10 tackles, including eight solo.

Hobart returns to action on Oct. 20, when its travels to Alfred University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
