Statesmen roll over Yellowjackets, 59-21

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Junior quarterback Craig Swanson passed for a school-record four touchdowns to lead visiting Hobart to a 59-21 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium. Swanson completed 19-of-27 passes for 370 yards. He was not intercepted.

The Statesmen rolled up 543 yards in offense, 173 rushing and 370 passing. Wide receiver Dan Suozzi caught seven passes for a game-high 176 yards, while tailback Ty Godinho rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns for Hobart. Placekicker Eric Ampuja tied a Hobart record by making all eight of his PATs. He also kicked a 37-yard field goal.

Rochester's offense was led by wide receiver Brian Ferris. He caught seven passes, three for touchdowns. The Yellowjackets totaled 331 yards in offense, with all but 72 of those yards gained before halftime.

Ferris caught two TD passes from freshman quarterback Pat Manuel, helping Rochester to a 14-3 lead with 5:43 left in the first quarter.

Swanson threw a 5-yard TD pass to Rick Spidalieri and a 5-yarder to Joe Pirozzolo. In between, he snuck in from the 1, giving Hobart a 24-14 lead with 5:55 left in the second quarter.

Spidalieri finished with three catches for 80 yards, while Pirozzolo had four catches for 95 yards.

Rochester answered with a seven-play, 72-yard drive, capped off by Manuel's 51-yard TD pass to Ferris. That pulled Rochester within 24-21 at the half.

Hobart broke it open with four touchdowns in the third quarter. Godinho ran for a pair, 7 yards and 30 yards. Swanson hit tight end Jeremy Archer with a 3-yard scoring strike and Pirozzolo with a 59-yard TD pass down the middle to stretch the lead to 52-21.

For Rochester, Ferris caught seven balls for 144 yards, but none in the second half. Manuel completed 16 of 37 for 240 yards. He was intercepted twice -- both in the third quarter and each led to a score.

Hobart improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. Rochester is 1-4 overall, 1-2 UCAA.

The 59 points are Hobart's highest total in a single game in 30 years -- since a 60-13 victory over RIT in 1972.
