GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second time in as many weeks, Hobart College junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Statesmen to an impressive victory. Swanson completed 19-of-27 passes for 370 yards and a school record four touchdowns in Hobart’s 59-21 drubbing of the University of Rochester.

The win also propelled the Statesmen to No. 2 in the Upstate New York Division III Football Poll, up one spot from a week ago. Upstate New York Division III Football is an association of 14 colleges and universities in the Upstate region that sponsor Division III football.

Swanson’s 70.4 completion percentage is the second highest of his career, while the 370 yards is a season high. He also broke the Hobart single game record for pass efficiency rating, 234.4. In addition to his four TD passes, Swanson also scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper. Of his 19 completions, three went for more than 45 yards (49, 56, 59).

Swanson was also named the Rochester Area College Athletics Co-Male Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row.

Teammates Eric Ampuja (Brockton/Brockton, Mass.) and Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) were named both to the UCAA’s weekly honor roll. A sophomore kicker, Ampuja tied three Hobart single game records in the win over the Yellowjackets: extra points attempted (8), extra points made (8), and points scored by kicking (11: FG, 8 PAT). A senior linebacker, Booth recorded six tackles, including two for a loss, and intercepted a pass, while breaking up three others. With Hobart leading by just three at halftime, 24-21, the defense, led by Booth made all the right adjustments at halftime and limited the Yellowjackets passing attack, which racked up 208 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, to just 32 yards passing and no touchdowns after the break.

The 59 points are Hobart’s highest total in a single game in 30 years—since a 60-13 victory over RIT in 1972. The Statesmen are 4-0 for the first time since opening the 1974 season with five straight victories. Hobart will attempt to match their ’74 counterparts on Oct. 19, when the Statesmen travel to Franklin & Marshall College. Kickoff with the Diplomats (3-3) is scheduled for 1 p.m.
