Swanson named to Verizon academic team

Craig Swanson '03

November 14, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District I College Division Football first-team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). As a first-team selection, he will be placed on the national ballot, attempting to become the first Statesman to earn first-team Academic All-American honors since Shawn Fazio ’81 was selected to the 1979 Baseball Academic All-America team.

To be eligible to the Verizon teams, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or significant reserve, and maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average.

A physics major, Swanson has excelled on the playing field and in the classroom. A two-time UCAA All-Academic selection, he was named to the Dean’s List following the 2000-01 academic year and was chosen as a Dean’s Scholar in 2001.

On the gridiron, the second-year starter has rewritten Hobart’s records book. Swanson has led the Statesmen (7-1, 3-0 UCAA) to their best start in 48 years, opening the 2002 campaign with seven straight victories. He has completed 155-of-252 passes (61.5 percent) for 1,986 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has been intercepted just seven times and boasts a 147.03 pass efficiency rating. With one regular season game remaining, Swanson has eclipsed the Hobart single season records for passing yards (formerly 1,913 in 10 games) and passing touchdowns (13 in 10 games).

A nominee for the Gagliardi Trophy (Division III Outstanding Player of the Year), he has broken or is on pace to break more than 25 Hobart records (game, season, and career).

The Statesmen close out the regular season at 1 p.m., on Nov. 16, at home against conference rival Rensselaer (7-1, 2-1). The winner will secure the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship and have the inside line on an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.
