Swanson named UCAA offensive player of the week

Craig Swanson '03

October 21, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for the third week in a row, following Hobart’s 35-21 victory at Franklin & Marshall College. He completed 25-of-36 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns as Hobart improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1974.

Swanson tied three Hobart records against the Diplomats. His 25 completions matched his single game record set last season against Rensselaer. His four touchdown passes tied his single game record he set last week at Rochester, while raising his season total to a record matching 13. Greg Helmer ’97 first threw 13 touchdowns in a season for Hobart in 1996.

Over the past three games, Swanson has completed 71.4 percent of his passes (65-of-91) for 928 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s been intercepted just twice during that span and has thrown 79 consecutive passes without an interception dating back to the first quarter of the St. Lawrence game on Sept. 28.

He’s currently on pace to become the first Statesman to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Swanson is averaging 239.0 yards passing per game and is on pace to finish with 2,151 yards for the season. Helmer holds the current single season benchmark, 1,913 yards in 1996.

For the season, Swanson has completed 62.8 percent of his passes (91-of-145) for 1,195 yards for a pass efficiency rating of 156.06.

Sophomore defensive back Skip Grantling (Clyde-Savanah/Clyde, N.Y.) was named to the UCAA Weekly Honor Roll, recording a game-high 13 tackles, including 11 solo.

On Oct. 26, against Alfred University, Hobart will attempt to run its record to 6-0 for the first time since the 1957 team won all six of its contests. It will be the 75th meeting between the two schools with the series tied at 35-35-4. The Statesmen have won each of the past six meetings, including 2001’s 24-21 thriller in Alfred. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Hobart’s Boswell Field.
