GENEVA, N.Y.—A pair of Hobart College football players earned recognition from the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association this week after the Statesmen defeated Alfred University 25-19 in double overtime on Saturday. Junior inside linebacker David Szentesy (Lackawanna/Lackawanna, N.Y.) and first-year defensive back Jimmy Gradis (Elwood John Glenn/Greenlawn, N.Y.) were named the UCAA’s Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Three other Statesmen were named to the UCAA Weekly Honor Roll: senior defensive end Chris Hanly (Swampscott/Swampscott, Mass.), junior quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.), and sophomore wide receiver Dan Suozzi (New Hampton/New Canaan, Conn.).

Hobart, at 6-0, is off to its best start since 1957 and remains in the top spot of the Upstate New York Division III Football poll. The Statesmen gained one first place vote over last week, garnering 10 out of a possible 14. Brockport State (6-1) is second, while Hobart’s next opponent, Ithaca (6-1), is third. Cortland State (6-2) and Rensselaer (5-1) round out the poll.

Szentesy registered a game-high 11 tackles, including nine solo, in the Statesmen's come-from-behind victory over the Saxons. He also recorded a key sack in the first overtime that moved Alfred out of field goal range. He leads the team in tackles (21-30-51), tackles for a loss (6.0), and sacks (3.5).

Gradis led Hobart first-years with four tackles, including three solo, on Saturday. He also recorded a key interception at the Hobart 15-yard line in the third quarter that kept Alfred from adding to its 13-6 halftime lead.

The Statesmen, one of only 17 unbeaten teams in Division III, will host the Bombers on Nov. 2, at Boswell Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Hobart will be looking for its first 7-0 start since 1954, against an Ithaca team that has only lost to the Statesmen twice in 25 meetings. The home team has won each of the past three meetings, including Hobart’s 19-0 win at Boswell Field in 2000.
