Four Statesmen earn UCAA honors

GENEVA, N.Y.--Four Hobart College football players were recognized by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association after the Statesmen's 35-29 season-ending loss to Rensselaer on Nov. 10. Wide receivers Dan Suozzi (New Hampton/New Caanan, Conn.) and Joe Pirozzolo (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.) were named Co-Rookies of the Week, while defensive back Skip Grantling (Clyde-Savannah/Clyde, N.Y.) and quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) were named to the Honor Roll.

Suozzi caught a team-high six passes for 134 yards against the Red Hawks. The first-year also returned three punts for 86 yards, including a 72-yarder for a touchdown. He also returned three kickoffs for 43 yards. Suozzi led the Statesmen and the UCAA in punt returns this season with 15 for 246 yards for an average of 16.4 yards per return. He was third on the team in receiving with 17 catches for 240 yards. Suozzi led the team in kickoff returns with 11 for 197 yards and was second in all-purpose yards with 664.

Pirozzolo caught five passes for a team-high 156 yards and two touchdowns against Rensselaer. The sophomore scored on a 78-yard bomb in the first quarter and added a 9-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Pirozzolo led Hobart in receiving this year, catching 27 passes for 487 yards and five touchdowns. He was third on the team in scoring with 30 points and third in all-purpose yards with 487.

Grantling made a team-high nine tackles, including seven solo, and broke up three passes on Saturday. This season, the first-year made 29 tackles, including 23 solo. He also intercepted three passes and broke up nine others.

Swanson completed 25 of 54 passes, including two touchdowns, for 437 yards at Rensselaer, breaking Hobart's single-game records for completions, attempts, and yards. The sophomore completed 110-of-226 passes for 1,444 yards and 10 touchdowns, this season.

The Statesmen wrap up the 2001 season with a 6-3 record, including a 2-2 mark against league opponents.
