Statesmen return to Upstate poll

November 5, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College football team moved back into the Upstate New York Division III weekly poll at No. 5 after a week's absence with a 28-18 win at home against St. John Fisher College. Saturday's win was the Statesmen's fifth straight over the Cardinals.

St. John Fisher grabbed an early 6-0 lead after returning the opening kickoff 89 yards. Hobart responded with four of the contest's next five touchdowns for the 10-point victory. First-year defensive back Skip Grantling (Clyde-Savannah/Clyde, N.Y.) got the Statesmen on the board recovering a punt blocked by junior linebacker Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) in the Cardinals' endzone with 8:03 left in the first quarter. First-year offensive lineman Alex Bell (Wallkill/Modena, N.Y.) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, first-year running back Ty Godinho (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) scored from 3-yards out and junior tight end Ryan Adams (Rome Free Academy/Rome, N.Y.) caught a 26-yard pass to account for the rest of the Statesmen scoring.

Godinho led Hobart on the ground with 86 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries. Sophomore quarterback Craig Swanson (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) completed 12-of-28 for 165 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Booth and junior defensive end Matt Daley (Bridgeton Academy/Rutland, Vt.) led the Statesmen with 10 tackles apiece. Booth also made four tackles for a loss and intercepted a pass.

Hobart (6-2, 2-1) shares the top five with No. 1 Rensselaer, No. 2 Brockport, No. 3 Ithaca and No. 4 Union. The Statesmen travel to Troy to face the top-ranked Red Hawks on Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. Last season, Hobart shutout Rensselaer 27-0 in Geneva.
