GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College Head Football Coach Mike Cragg recently announced that Kevin DeWall ’00 will serve as the new offensive coordinator for the Statesmen during the 2003 season. DeWall takes over for Declan Walsh, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Riverdale Country Day School.

“After spending the past three seasons on our staff, Kevin is ready to take over the reigns as the offensive coordinator,” Cragg said. “He is a great motivator and knows the technical side of the game as well as anyone. I’m sure our offense will flourish under his tutelage.”

The defensive backs coach since 2000, DeWall was a four-year standout on Hobart’s Division I lacrosse team. Coming out for football his senior year, the former high school all-star didn’t miss a beat, playing in all nine games and cracking the starting lineup by midseason while registering 17 tackles and two interceptions.

Cragg also announced that 2003 Hobart graduate Matt Daley will join the Statesmen coaching staff. A two-sport star, Daley was a linebacker for the football team and a defenseman for the ice hockey squad. On the gridiron, he recorded 140 career tackles, 38 tackles for a loss and 18 sacks, helping the Statesmen to their first two NCAA tournament appearances. He was named to the All-UCAA teams three times. He was recently award the William C. Stiles ’43 Award, presented to the senior whose leadership, determination, and character most reflect the traits and value of Bill Stiles.

“We are very lucky to have such a good young man join our staff,” Cragg said. “Winning the Stiles Award speaks volumes of him. He possesses great character and leadership and I’m sure he will do an excellent job for us.”

On the ice, Daley led Hobart’s steady improvement from a team that won just six games during his first season to the 2002-03 squad that posted the first winning season for the Statesmen in a decade (14-10-2). Daley served as a team captain in both sports.

The Statesmen open the 2003 season at Dickinson on Sept. 13 and will host Union in their home opener on Sept. 27. With the rest of the staff and a core of players returning, Hobart is looking to defend its UCAA title and make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.
