Gorton wins at Pine Acres, garners Liberty League praise
September 18 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart first-year George Gorton (Johnson City/Endwell, N.Y.) earned individual medalist honors and led the Statesmen to the team championship of the Pitt-Bradford Fall Golf Invitational on Sept. 18. His efforts were recognized by the Liberty League this afternoon as he earned the Rookie of the Week Award.
Gorton finished the tournament with birdie-eagle-par to take home individual medalist honors. He carded an even par 72 at the Pine Acres Country Club. Through three rounds, Gorton is second on the team in scoring average.
Three of Gorton’s teammates tied for second place with a one-over 73: senior Drew Slocum (University School/Milwaukee, Wis.), first-year Brian Killduff (Morristown-Beard School/Summit, N.J.), and first-year Luke Mindlin (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.). The Statesmen finished 20 points better than runner-up Penn State Berhend with a team score of 291. It is the first time Hobart has won an invitational other than its own in more than six years.
The Statesmen are back in action this afternoon in the Oswego Invitational.
