July 28, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Hobart College Director of Athletics Mike Hanna recently announced the retirement of Golf Coach Bob Maher. Hanna also announced the appointment of Canandaigua resident Bill Quinn as the Statesmens golf coach for the 2003-04 season. Bob stepped in as Hobarts head golf coach in 1997 when the team needed effective leadership, Hanna said. He brought organization, enthusiasm, sound teaching, and a strong commitment to our student-athletes. As a result, Coach Maher is leaving the program in very good shape for the future. We are deeply grateful for his teamwork, dedication, and his friendship. We wish Bob and his wife, Joan, all the best for many, many years of happiness in their retirement. A 1968 graduate of Niagara University, Quinn played both golf and basketball for the Purple Eagles. Over the past seven years, he was an adjunct professor at Finger Lakes Community College, teaching both business and physical education classes. Along with teaching golf at FLCC, Quinn also coached the Lakers mens basketball team. A licensed real estate broker since 1987, Quinn had previously served as director of athletics at St. Marys School in Canandaigua where he and his wife, Noreen, reside. What Bill brings to our staff and to Hobart Golf is a wealth of knowledge that he has gained in his years as a teacher and as a coach, Hanna said. Hes a knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher of the game of golf. He has a passion for the game and for working with young people. He will not only have an important influence on our golfers but also on our staff. In addition to the coaching change, Hanna also announced the Hobart golf team will now call the Clifton Springs Country Club its home course. The team returns in late August for preseason play and opens the 2003-04 season at the Elmira College Invitational on Sept. 5. The Statesmen will host the Hobart Invitational at Clifton Springs CC at 1:30 p.m., on Oct. 4. |
