LAKE PLACID, N.Y.--What did you do during summer break?

A common question that will be asked many times over the coming weeks, as students return to the Hobart and William Smith Colleges campus in Geneva.

It is doubtful that many will have as grueling, and at the same time as impressive, an answer as Lee Carrier.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder prepared for his senior season on the Hobart hockey team by training for and completing the 2005 Ford Ironman USA Triathlon in Lake Placid on July 24. Nearly 2,000 athletes from around the globe converged on the site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games for one of the most grueling, single-day endurance races in the world. The competition begins with a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride, and topped off with a 26.2-mile run.

A native of Ballston Lake and a graduate of Northwood School, Carrier completed the course in 12 hours, 34 minutes, and 30 seconds. He finished 758th out of 1,997 competitors and 16th out of 35 in his age group (18-24). Carrier needed 1:16:43 to cover the swimming course, 6:07:31 for the bike course, and 5:00:14 for the final run.

On ice, Carrier has played in 67 career games, helping the Statesmen to a 43-24-11 record over the previous three seasons. He has scored 11 career goals, including a pair of game-winners, and notched 12 assists.

The Hobart hockey team opens its 28th varsity season on Oct. 29, at Potsdam at 7 p.m. The Statesmen will debut on home ice two weeks later on Nov. 12, when they host ECAC West rival Elmira at 4 p.m.
