GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior defenseman Greg Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on three others to lead the Hobart College ice hockey team to a 7-5 ECAC West victory over visiting Elmira College at the Geneva Recreation Complex this evening. The win evens the Statesmen’s record at 2-2-0 (1-2-0 in ECAC West), while the Soaring Eagles slip to 2-4-0 (0-3-0).

The first period was a fairly even affair, with both teams penning a power play and an even strength goal in their ledgers. Elmira struck first, just four minutes in, on first-year Dave McKenna’s (Toronto, Ontario) power play goal. Senior Will Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) equalized with his own power play goal off assists from Gallagher and senior Edward Poirier (Methuen, Mass.). The visitors took a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the first period on a goal by junior Justin Joy (Norfolk, N.Y.), but the Statesmen answered on the first of two goals by senior Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.), 79 seconds before the intermission.

Hobart grabbed its first lead of the contest five minutes into the second period when McVey scored a short-handed goal on assists from Brame and junior Adam Scott (Manchester, Mass.). The tally chased starting goalie, senior Greg Fargo (Kingston, Ontario), who finished with 15 saves in just over 25 minutes of action.

McVey’s goal touched off an offensive flurry for the Statesmen in the second period as sophomore Shawn Houde (Manchester, N.H.), junior Conor Bradley (West Hartford, Conn.), and junior Mike McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) also scored in the frame, the latter two on the power play.

Hobart led 6-2 heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, Elmira sandwiched a pair of power play goals around Gallgher’s first goal of the campaign to make it a 7-4 contest with just over eight minutes left to play. First-year Derrick Ryan (Fournier, Ontario) closed out the night’s scoring at 17:22 of the third, but even with the extra skater on the ice—the Eagles played the final 97 seconds with an empty net—Elmira could get no closer.

Sophomore goalie Dimitri Papaevagelou (Windham, N.H.) finished the contest with 32 saves, the third highest total of his career. Eagles’ reliever sophomore Raphael Cundari (Sault Ste. Marie, Onatrio) made 16 stops in a shade over 33 minutes.

Hobart returns to action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18, when the Statesmen host Cortland. Elmira is off until Dec. 2 when the Soaring Eagles host Lebanon Valley.
