GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team scored three second period goals in 95 seconds to explode past SUNY Cortland 6-1 in a non-conference contest this evening at the Geneva Recreational Complex. Senior Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.) paced the Statesmen offense with his first collegiate hat trick.
The Red Dragons opened the scoring on the power play just 2:11 seconds into the first period as first-year forward Nick Catanzaro (Buffalo, N.Y.) deflected a shot from sophomore forward Matt Goslant (Northfield, Vt.) past sophomore goaltender Trevor Pieri (Needham, Mass.). Despite entering the first intermission down a goal, Hobart carried the offensive play, outshooting Cortland 11-5.
The Statesmen offense came out firing on all cylinders in the second period, registering three goals in 1:35. McVey netted the equalizer on the power play at the 7:30 mark. Assisting on the goal were seniors Greg Gallagher (Framingham, Mass) and Edward Poirier (Methuen, Mass.). Senior Lee Carrier (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) one-timed his first goal of the season under the right arm of junior Cody Williams (Faribault, Minn.) off a feed from junior Adam Scott (Manchester, Mass.) to give Hobart the lead for good. Twenty-four seconds later, junior Jonathan Swift (Andover, Mass.) ripped a shot threw the five-hole for his third goal of the season. Junior forwards Conor Bradley (West Hartford, Conn.) and Mike McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) assisted on the goal.
Just 45 seconds into the third period, McVey pounced on senior Brian Keene’s (Sherborn, Mass.) rebound to extend Hobart’s advantage to 4-1. The Statesmen continued to apply the pressure as Bradley sniped his fourth goal of the season into the upper left corner of the cage. McVey rounded out the scoring as he converted on a short-handed breakaway at the 15:23 mark of the third period.
Pieri made 18 stops to record his first win of the season, while Williams turned away 36 Hobart shots.
Hobart (3-2-0) will return to action on Nov. 19 when the Statesmen host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 p.m.
