GENEVA, N.Y.—Eight Hobart College student-athletes earned a place on the 2006 ECAC West Men’s Hockey All-Academic Team. Senior forwards Will Brame (West Hartford, Conn.), Lee Carrier (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), Matthew Garman (Wexford, Pa.), and Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.), senior defenseman Greg Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.), junior defensemen Mike Manos (North Andover, Mass.) and Michael Polsonetti (Lynn, Mass.), and sophomore forward Shawn Houde (Manchester, N.H.) represented the Statesmen based on their academic and athletic excellence.

A tri-captain, Brame is making his third consecutive appearance on the All-Academic team. He exemplified the hallmarks of Hobart hockey—perseverance and hard work—as he registered 11 points (3-8) in 21 games, despite being plagued by a string of injuries. On Jan. 10, Brame netted a pair of power-play goals to lead the Statesmen to a come-from-behind victory at SUNY Brockport. A four-year starter, he registered 56 career points (24-21) in 94 contests.

An economics major, Brame has earned a lengthy list of academic honors. The Dean’s List student is a member of the Druid Society, Hobart’s senior honor society, and Omicron Delta Epsilon, a national economics honor society.

Carrier, an assistant captain, is also making his third straight appearance on the ECAC West All-Academic Team. He used his physical presence (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) to spark Hobart with his powerful fore checks, generating turnovers in the attacking zone. In 20 games, Carrier logged two goals, including the game-winner against SUNY Cortland, and two assists. A balanced scorer throughout his career, Carrier recorded 26 points (12-14) in 86 games.

The economics major is an R. Chapin Siebert Scholar and an Opell Family Scholar. Following graduation, Carrier will spend four weeks studying the Russian culture, ecology, and economy in Siberia.

Garman saw action in 14 games this season, producing 11 points (7-4). On Feb. 3, he matched his career-high with three points (1-2), scoring the decisive goal in a 6-4 victory at Lebanon Valley. In 60 career games, Garman registered 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points.

A double major in chemistry and biology, Garman was nominated for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. He has an exceptional academic resume, including induction into Eta Sigma Phi, a national honor society in classics.

McVey, an assistant captain, is also making his second consecutive appearance on the All-Academic squad. The All-ECAC West second-team selection finished second on the team in goals (11) and fifth in points (19). He finished his career with six short-handed goals, one shy of the Hobart record. A prolific scorer, he collected 77 career points, including 43 assists, in 101 games.

McVey is a Dean’s List student and an economics major.

Already highly decorated, Gallagher became just the second Statesman selected to the American Hockey Coaches Association East All-America Team after garnering All-ECAC West first-team recognition. A tri-captain, he tied for the ECAC West lead and was 15th in the nation in points by a defenseman (5-18-23). Gallagher earned the ECAC West Player of the Week award for his season-high four points in a 7-5 victory over Elmira. A four-year starter, Gallagher complied 64 points, including 50 assists, in 102 career games.

Gallagher is a political science major.

Manos, a two-time ECAC West All-Academic pick, solidified the blue line with his tenacious style of play. A versatile athlete, he also contributed to the offensive rush, setting up 10 goals, including a season-high three assists against Elmira on Nov. 12. In 42 career games, Manos has tallied 18 points, including 14 helpers.

Manos is double majoring in architecture and economics. He is a Lewis H. Elliott Scholar.

A hard-nosed defender, Polsonetti disrupted the opposition trying to gain the blue line with bone-crushing hits. He enjoyed a season-high two points as Hobart rallied to defeat SUNY Brockport. Polsonetti has handed out 20 assists and scored nine goals in 64 career contests.

Polsonetti is a history major.

Houde, an emerging offensive threat, enjoyed a breakout season for the Statesmen, finishing seventh on the team in points (10-4-14), including two game-winning goals. A proven scorer, he has posted 17 goals in just 38 career games.

An economics major, Houde is a Dean’s List student.

To earn a spot on the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one full academic year at his institution and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The student also must have competed in at least half of his team’s games, goalies in at least 33 percent of his team’s total minutes.

Hobart completed the season with a 20-8-0 overall record, five more wins than any previous Statesmen squad. Ranked seventh in the final USCHO.com poll, Hobart earned its second berth in the NCAA Tournament field. The Statesmen upset Norwich University 3-1 in the quarterfinal round to earn the program’s first tournament victory, advancing to the national semifinals.
