GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart hockey forward Matt Garman (North Allegheny/Wexford, Pa.) was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine At-Large Academic All-District first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A biology and chemistry major, he graduated summa cum laude with high honors in chemistry earlier this month.
As a first team selection, Garman will advance to the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors.
Garman played in 14 games this season for the Statesmen (20-8-0) as they advanced to the NCAA Division III Semifinal for the first time in the program’s history. He scored seven goals and assisted on four more. Garman recorded a season-high three points at Lebanon Valley on Feb. 3, notching the game-winning goals and a pair of assists. He completed his career with 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points.
Garman and his classmates are the most successful class in terms of wins (63-32-11) and winning percentage (.646) to graduate from the Hobart hockey program. In the 24 seasons prior to their arrival on campus, the Statesmen had just four winning seasons, but Garman and Co. produced four consecutive winning slates.
In the classroom, Garman was an all-star as well. A three-time ECAC West All-Academic selection, he received the 2005 Richardson Prize in Pre-Med, the 2005 Eaton-Cross Prize in Biology & Chemistry, and the 2003 Chemical Rubber Company First-Year Chemistry Achievement Award. A Hale Scholar, Hobart Scholar, Faculty Scholar, and Dean’s Scholar, Garman was a member of the Eta Sigma Phi Honor Society in Classics and the Orange Key Society, Hobart’s sophomore class honor society. He earned a spot on the Dean’s List during all four of his years on campus.
Garman’s honors project—“Novel Approach to Natural Product Synthesis: Aristolactam Alkaloids Preparation by Organopalladium Chemistry”—dealt with the use of organic chemistry to develop treatments for cancer.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large.
