Statesmen drop ECAC West opener

UTICA, N.Y.—The No. 6 Hobart College ice hockey team fell to Utica College 3-2 in overtime tonight in its first ECAC West game of the season. The Statesmen drop to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league, while Utica improves to 1-1-0 and 1-0-0 in the ECAC West.

Senior Jonathan Swift (Andover, Mass.) connected off an assist from classmate Mike McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) for Hobart’s first goal of the game 12 minutes into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Utica would score less than a minute later to even the game at 1-1.

Less than four minutes into the third period, Utica scored, taking a 2-1 lead. With less than two minutes to play in regulation, senior Statesman Mike Polsonetti (Lynn, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season off a pass from first-year Blake Bonham (Toronto, Ontario) and McCarthy to force the game into overtime. Utica tallied the game-winning goal just over three minutes into the overtime period.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keith Longo (Hopedale, Mass.) recorded 26 saves for Hobart.

The Statesmen will be in action again on Nov. 4 when they host No. 5 Manhattanville for a conference game at 4p.m.
