Statesmen continue streak with victory over Brockport

Colby McVey

Craig Levey

January 25, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart college sophomore Craig Levey (Missassauga, Ontario) and first-year Colby McVey (Chicago, Illinois) both notched a goal and two assists to lead the Statesmen hockey team to a 5-1 victory over visiting Brockport State. Hobart improves to 12-6-1 overall, besting their 2001-02 record by two games with six matches left to play.

Looking to increase their unbeaten streak to six games, the Statesmen took a 1-0 lead late in the first period when junior R.C. Schmidt (Buxton, Maine) took a pass from first-year Matthew Garman (Wexford, Pa.) and slipped it past the Golden Eagles’ goalie Brian Tefft (Blasdell, N.Y.). Just five minutes into the second session sophomore Levey netted his 10th goal of the season to put Hobart ahead for good at 2-0. Less than two minutes later first-year William Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) and Levey connected on a power play to put the game out of reach.

With just under four minutes remaining in the game Golden Eagles’ senior Nate VanKouwenberg (Rochester, N.Y.) spoiled Hobart’s quest for its second consecutive shutout with his second goal of the year. McVey responded just 20 seconds later with his first goal and third point of the game. First-year Brian Keane (Sherborn, Mass.) would close out the scoring for the Statesmen when he knocked home a rebound from his own shot with just over one minutes remaining.

Hobart peppered the Brockport goal with 63 shots, while giving up only 17 attempts on its own net. Defensively the Statesmen were strong, killing all their penalties, including a five-minute man down sequence. In their last six games Hobart has allowed just two power-play goals in 23 chances for a 0.86 percentage.

In the net Tefft pulled in 58 saves in 60 minutes of action, while sophomore goaltender Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) went the distance making 16 saves.

Hobart hits the ice again on Feb. 1, when it hosts ECAC West rival and fourth-ranked RIT. Faceoff is slated for 4 p.m., at the Geneva Recreation Complex.
