Hobart erupts for 7 in win over Cortland

November 23, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team erupted for seven goals this evening at the Geneva Recreation Complex, notching a 7-1 win over the Cortland State Red Dragons. Seven different Statesmen registered goals as Hobart avenged a 5-2 loss to the Red Dragons just 11 days ago.

In the first period, Hobart (6-3-0) got all the offense it would need. First-year Edward Poirier (Methuen, Mass.) opened the scoring just 4:29 into the contest. Sixty-three seconds later first-year William Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) lit the lamp for the Statesmen.

During the first intermission Hobart Head Coach Mark Taylor must have offered his team some very sound advice because it took junior R.C. Schmidt (Buxton, Maine) just 29 seconds to give the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Andy Kasprzak (Farmington, Conn.) made it 4-0 midway through the period.

During the second intermission, Taylor surely repeated his advice, because it took senior Chris Thornton (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) just 31 seconds to balloon the Hobart lead to 5-0.

Cortland finally solved the Statesmen defense at the 10:23 mark on a shot by senior Scott Louis (Clifton Park, N.Y.).

First-years Brian Keane (Sherborn, Mass.) and Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.) closed out the scoring with tallies just 58 seconds apart beginning at the 13:33 mark.

Kasprzak, McVey, and Thornton each finished with a goal and an assist.

Sophomore goalie Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win with 26 saves, while junior Mark Paine (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss, making 15 saves on 19 shots in 31:07. Senior John Larnerd (Upper Darby, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Loiacono (Commack, N.Y.) combined for 12 stops over the final 28:53 for Cortland.

Hobart returns to action at 4 p.m., on Nov. 24, at Potsdam. The Statesmen opened the season with a 4-0 home loss to the 11th-ranked Bears.
