January 29, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—A trio of Hobart College hockey players were recently honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference after the Statesmen increased its unbeaten streak to a school record six games with victories over Buffalo State and Brockport State. Sophomores Craig Levey (Missassauga, Ontario) and Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned Co-Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week honors, respectively, while first-year Matthew Garman (Wexford, Pa.) garnered Rookie of the Week accolades.

Levey notched four points on two goals and two assists to lead Hobart to a pair of non-conference victories this past week. The sophomore forward recorded his 10th assist in Hobart’s 5-0 shutout of Buffalo State, while netting the game-winning goal and two assists three days later in the Statesmen’s 5-1 victory over visiting Brockport State. He leads the team with 13 goals and 11 assists on the year.

Garnering his 21st and 22nd career victory this past week, Lavelle moved into second place on the career wins list, just one shy of the top spot held by Gabe Halleus ’92. Against the Bengals, the sophomore goaltender recorded his first shutout of 2002-03 by stopping 24 shots. Three days later he grabbed 16 saves in Hobart’s win over the Golden Eagles. His 2.48 goals against average is the 18th best in the nation, while his .904 save percentage lands him 28th among all goaltenders in Division III hockey.

Earning Rookie of the Week accolades for the second time this season, Garman had a monstrous week, assisting on five goals in two games. In the midweek matchup with Buffalo State the first-year forward assisted on each of Hobart’s first three goals. He continued his output on offense a few days later, providing assists on the Statesmen’s first and final goals against Brockport State. He is ranked 18th among rookie scorers in Division III hockey with 16 points in 15 games.

Sporting a 12-6-1 record, including a four-game win streak, the Statesmen are just three wins shy of tying the 1978-79 team’s record 15 wins in a season. Pacing the Hobart offense is Levey with 13 goals and 11 assists, while first-year Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.) and Garman are close behind with 20 and 16 points, respectively. Defensively the Statesmen are much improved from a year ago. Currently ranked 11th in the nation in scoring defense with a 2.53 goals against average, Hobart has allowed two goals or less 12 times this season, earning an 11-0-1 record in those games.

The Statesmen hit the ice again when ECAC West rival and seventh-ranked RIT visits the Geneva Recreation Complex on Feb. 1. Faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
