Flying Dutchmen blank Statesmen, 3-0

December 5, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Lebanon Valley College hockey team overpowered Hobart College to shutout the Statesmen for the first time this season. The Flying Dutchmen scored a shorthanded goal in the first period, an even strength goal in the second, and wrapped up the scoring with an empty-netter.

Lebanon Valley dominated the first period, outshooting Hobart 17-1. The Dutchmen finally broke through on a penalty kill at the 5:47 mark. Senior forward Shaun McGinty (The Gunnery/Churchville, Pa.) centered the puck from the right corner to wide open junior forward Brian Yingling (Bismarck Bobcats/Steelton, Pa.) in front of the net. Yingling went in all alone and wrapped the puck around first-year goalie Adam Lavelle (Bridgton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.) for a 1-0 Lebanon Valley lead. The Statesmen limited the number of Dutchmen quality scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes, but could not generate any of their own.

In the second period, Hobart showed some offensive spark early, but couldn't get on the board. Lebanon Valley turned up the pressure late and doubled the score with 6:57 remaining. Lavelle lost sight of the puck behind his net and never saw sophomore defenseman Nick McCreary's (Wyoming Seminary/Wynnewood, Pa.) shot beat him stickside.

The Statesmen outshot the Dutchmen 13-8 in the final frame, but were shutdown by the Lebanon Valley defense and senior goalie Kevin Block (Wisconsin Wolves/Webster, N.Y.). At the 16:50 mark of the third period, Lavelle was pulled for an extra attacker. Two minutes later junior forward Scott Schilling (Wisconsin Wolves/West Allis, Wis.) fired a long shot into the empty net to close the scoring a 3-0.

Lavelle stopped 47 of the 49 shots he faced for Hobart. Block made 23 saves for his first shutout of the season. The Dutchmen were 1-7 on the power play, while the Statesmen were 0-3.

Hobart wraps up the 2001 portion of its schedule at home on Dec. 7, when Buffalo State comes to Geneva for a 7 p.m. faceoff. The Bengals edged the Statesmen 7-6 in Buffalo on Nov. 20.
