Statesmen hand 15th-ranked Fredonia third loss

November 20, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore goalie Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 31 saves to lead the Hobart College hockey team to a 2-1 victory over 15th-ranked Fredonia State. This marks the Statesmen’s second win over Fredonia in 2002, with the first coming in a 3-2 victory at the Buffalo State Tournament.

Hobart (5-3-0) outplayed the Blue Devils (6-3-0) for much of the game, pushing the pace and physical play. Despite the fast play, neither team was able to get on the board in the first period. Junior R.C. Schmidt (Buxton, Maine) finally put the Statesmen up 1-0 six minutes into the second session off of assists from Craig Levey (Missassauga, Ontario) and Will Bodine (North Massapequa, N.Y.). Lavelle continued his strong play in between the pipes during the second frame, making 10 saves to protect the team’s one goal advantage.

The Statesmen jumped ahead 2-0 with less than five minutes remaining when first-year Brian Keane (Sherborn, Mass.) finished a great passing sequence from Andy Boschetto (Brookfield, Conn.) and Edward Poirier (Methuen, Mass.). Fredonia’s Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.) spoiled Lavelle’s shutout when he notched a power-play goal with 44 seconds left.

Making his first collegiate start, Fredonia goalie Simon Maignan (Pully, Switzerland) made 25 stops in his 58 minutes of action.

The Hobart return to action when it hosts Cortland on Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.
