December 11, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.First-year forward Matthew Garman (Wexford, Pa.) was recently named the Eastern College Athletic Conference hockey Rookie of the Week after notching two goals and two assists last week for the Statesmen. Splitting the weekend contests, Hobart moved to 7-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in ECAC West play. Looking to upset ECAC West rival Manhattanville, Garman knocked home his first career power-play goal to pull the Statesmen within one. Down 4-3 in the third period, Hobart would not get any closer eventually losing to the 12th-ranked Valiants 6-3. The next afternoon, the rookie led the charge in the Statesmens 6-5 victory over Lebanon Valley. Down by one early in the first period Garman provided an assist knotting the game at one. Behind by a score of 2-1 in the opening minutes of the second period, he garnered his third goal of the season and second assist on the afternoon within three minutes of each other to give Hobart its first lead of the game. In eight games this season Garman has scored three goals and five assists placing seventh on the team in with eight points. Leading the Statesmen offense is sophomore Craig Levey (Mississauga, Ontario) with eight goals and four assists, while junior R.C. Schmidt (Buxton, Maine) has contributed six scores and six assists. In between the pipes sophomore goalie Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) sports a .884 save percentage, making 259 saves in 12 games. Hobart does not hit the ice again until Jan. 4, when it travels to play perennial powerhouse Middlebury College. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. |
