GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College scored a goal with 5:35 remaining in the third period to defeat Williams College 2-1 in men’s non-conference hockey this evening at the Geneva Recreation Complex. Junior Craig Levey (Mississauga, Ontario) and sophomore Will Brame (Chicago, Ill.). both notched a goal and an assist in the Statesmen’s victory.

Hobart (3-2-2) started things off on the right foot, getting a goal from Brame just 50 seconds into the game. Levey recorded the assist on the score. Three minutes later the Ephs (1-1-0) tied the game, when Dennis Kim (Lake Forest, Ill.) was able to knock the puck through traffic and past Hobart goaltender Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.). Defense tightened up after that, as the two teams went scoreless for the rest of the period.

Despite a combined five power-play opportunities in the second session, neither team was able to score, leaving the game tied at one going into the third period. The Statesmen outshot Williams 15-6 in the stanza, but strong play in goal by Brad Shirley (Hanover, N.H.) kept the Ephs from falling behind.

Looking like the game might be headed for overtime, Levey took Brame’s pass from behind the net and fired the puck by Shirley for what would be the game winner, his first of the season. Trying to even the score with 1:09 remaining, the Ephs pulled Shirley in favor of an extra attacker, but the Statesmen were up to the task, as they grinded out the 2-1 victory.

Hobart outshot Williams 36-25 for the game, while both teams were 0-4 on the power play. Lavelle grabbed 24 saves for the Statesmen and needs just 34 more to surpass Chris Connolly ’01 as the all-time saves leader. Shirley made 34 stops for the Ephs.

Hobart returns to action on Dec. 5, traveling to Neumann for an ECAC West game. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
