January 21, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Eastern College Athletic Conference recently named Hobart College forward Colby McVey (Chicago, Ill.) its hockey Rookie of the Week. He notched three assists and a goal to lead the Statesmen to victories over SUNYAC foes Brockport and ninth-ranked Fredonia. McVey has received the award twice before on Nov. 5, and Nov. 25, and is the only player to garner it three times so far this season.

Facing off against Brockport State on Jan. 17, the first-year forward assisted on Hobart’s second score and netted an unassisted shorthanded goal to lead the Statesmen past the Golden Eagles 5-2. The following night McVey played a crucial role in Hobart’s third consecutive victory over the Fredonia Blue Devils, assisting on the game-winner and notching a power-play goal to secure a 4-1 Statesmen victory. He leads all Hobart rookies with six goals and 10 assists for the season.

Sophomores Craig Levey (Missassauga, Ontario) and Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) were both named to the Honor Roll. Levey netted two goals against Brockport and added another score and assist in Hobart’s win over the Blue Devils.

Between the pipes, Lavelle continued to shut down opposing teams, giving up just one goal on 37 shots this past weekend. Entering the game in the third period against Brockport, he shut out the Golden Eagles stopping five shots. The next night Lavelle was outstanding, recording 31 saves, holding the Blue Devils scoreless for over 58 minutes.

The Statesmen improved to 10-6-1 last weekend, matching the total number of wins in the 2001-02 season. Pacing the Hobart offense is Levey with 12 goals and eight assists, while McVey’s 16 points is second on the team. Junior forward R.C. Schmidt (Buxton, Maine) has contributed six goals and eight assists to the Statesmen’s cause. In goal Lavelle sports a .897 save percentage and a 2.74 goals against average.

Hobart returns to the ice on Jan. 22, when it hosts Buffalo State at the Geneva Recreation Complex. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
