January 10, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Hobart College sophomore Andy Boschetto (Brookfield, Conn.) netted a goal just over a minute into overtime to lead the Statesmen to a 3-2 victory over visiting Geneseo State. This victory puts Hobart at 8-6-0 for the season, while the Knights fall to 6-5-2 overall in 2002-03. Playing only their second game since Dec. 7, the Statesmen looked strong in the opening period firing 11 shots on goal. Sophomore Jesse Desper (West Kennebunk, Maine) started the scoring in the 14th minute of the first session when he took a pass from Will Bodine (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and skated past the Knights defense to slip the puck past Geneseo goalie Brett Walker (Regina, Saskatchewan). Hobart moved ahead 2-0 in the ninth minute of the second period off a perfectly placed shot into the upper right corner of the net by junior defenseman Carl Michaelson (Hudson, Quebec). Just five minutes later Jay Kuczmanski (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) converted a penalty shot for Geneseo cutting the Statesmens lead in half. Peppering the Hobart goal with 11 shots in the final period Kuczmanski notched his second goal of the game to tie the score at two with just over four minutes remaining. Knotted at two at the end of the 60 minutes the two squads headed to a five-minute sudden-death overtime where Boschetto scored his second goal of the season to give the Statesmen the victory. Sophomore goaltender Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 24 stops on the night to win his 18th career game, moving him into sole possession of the third spot on the career wins list for Hobart goalies. Walker was strong in goal as well, posting 26 saves on the evening. The Statesmen return to action tomorrow, Jan. 11, when they travel to Geneseo for a rematch. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. |
